Although work began on the cathedral in 1019, the red sandstone building was finished only in 1500. Although the Romanesque sculptures on the Saint-Gall door are impressive, the gothic style finally imposed itself as the centuries went by. The coloured tiles and two steeples make it one of the most original buildings in Basel.
